My 1986 dually's check engine light came on while towing my 5th wheel. We pulled over as I could smell rubber. It was an elec fire. I put it out with the fire extinquisher. Had both towed. The fire destroyed the harness, some other wiring and some hoses behind and below the carb and air filter.

My question is this: is it worth fixing? The fire did not encompass the whole engine, in fact all gages were showing perfect when I shut the truck off and the engine was running fine. The mechanic said they think it was the alternator but will check further after our insurance adjuster verifies if we have any coverage to help fix it. I also don't know what to ask for it if I sold it for scrap. Only paid $2500 for it in 2007. This truck is a workhorse and in mint cond. Even the tow truck operator said the underneath is great. (never seen snow) It has 88,000 original miles on it. And has had some exterior body work done. But shows great.

Replies would be appreciated. PS..... I am a woman. Semi knowledgable about engines but no idea how to fix one. So bear with me. Thanks
