currently removing my 4l60e automatic transmission from my 1998 sonoma, to replace is with a 700r4 that my buddy is giving to me, first would the 700r4 bolt up? and my problem right now is i have removed the started, and can see a small portion of the flywheel, how can i spin the flywheel so i can get to the torque converter bolts? i tryed putting crobar in between the teeth and tryed spinning it that way but wouldent spin, and i see nothing i could take off to expose more of the fly wheel, this is my first time removing a transmission so excuse my retarded-ness, the engine is a 4.3L vortec if that helps any, thanks!

well found a round piece of metal that i popped off and can see the flywheel and can get more leverage from there and the flywheel is now moving, slowly but surely, but still would like some feedback on if the 700r4 would bolt up:D

Spin the crank from the harmonic balancer bolt and good luck with the 700r4, you going to have to do lot's of tuning on your set up to make sure you don't burn it out and have a proper shift points with the right governor to match your engine's RPM and road speed.

Keep us posted on your project.

i already have all the torque converter bolts off now
im probly about to give a few junkyards a call to see if they have the tranny thats in it
thanks

no reverse, when i get up to about 20 it wont shift from first to 2nd as with all the other gears, i have to let off the gas, then itll shift really hard, and if push the gas too much the rpms jump to 5000, i noticed today when i got done working on my truck i had a bunch of metal shavings on my face after wards, could any of those be the problem?

i have now came across another problem, today i tried taking the transmission out, but it wont break free from the engine, tried prying it off with a cro bar (which moved the part i was prying on about a mm or 2 but went back into place when i let off), wiggling the shit out of it, from my understanding theres only 6 bell housing bolts right? i cant see on the very top of the trans to see if theres one tucked away up there, but iv taken 6 of the bell housing and 3 torque converter bolts, any ideas why it wont break free? im thinking in the morning im going to take a come along to the sob:mad:

Only 8 bolts hold a 4l60E in. Two on the top and two on either side. After you've also removed the TC/flexplate bolts you have to rock the tranny a little to get it to slide off the dowel pins. The ONE bolt that's a P.I.T.A. to get out is the very TOP DEAD CENTER bolt.

You have to remove the transmission cross member off and tilt the transmission and engine back to get to the bolts with a swivel and extensions. ;)

Good luck and hope this helps.

1st and 3rd only, no 2,4 or R; sunshell is fractured or splines are sheared off. R&R. Try not to run or drive the car or further damage could result.

well tomorrow going to remove the distributor cap and some hoses so i can get to the 2 bolts from in the hood, when the tranny is out going to take it to a transmission shop right now the road and pay them to tell me whats wrong, and if its nothing too major/expensive ill have them fix it aswell, thanks for the help man

Good luck that way and let me know how you made out, i found it easier to remove the transmission cross member as mentioned to get to the two top bolts to remove and to reinstall. I know it's a PINA but it's the fastest way and easiest way when we would swap out the 4.3 with a 5.7 or 5.3 vortec ;)

Good luck and take your time.

been busy lately and havent been able to work on it, but today i remover the distributer, marked everything and lifted the transmission up so i can reach it easier, looks like ill be able to get them off, but after i took the distributer off, i noticed a wire connector was broken, its in 2 pieces, its connected to a bolt similar to the one on the transfer case to drain fluid, same size, and idk what it goes to or if that could be the problem, its connected to the back of the engine, and runs into something that holds all of the wires together, so idk wth it goes to, any ideas? i know this isent very descriptive, wish i had a camera so i could take a picture

well a camera i thought was broke wasent, so i took a picture before it started pouring rain

the part that broke is those 2 yellow prongs, was a connector, but no idea what that goes to, any ideas?hoping thats what was wrong with it, but id doubt it, just making sure before i pull the trans off, the distributer was where that white napkin is, put it in there so nothing would fall in

got the trans off today, took the pan off, wasent any metal shavings in it, everything else looked good, about to go out there and see if i cant get to the sun shell, im guessing that its a good sign theres no metal in the pan?

Here is a link for the parts to your 4L60E transmission, internal and external parts to help you get things a part and together again. Good luck and keep up the great work and keep us posted. ;)

Just make sure that everything is clean but since your have everything apart, might as well rebuild the transmission and replace all the hard parts. Here is a link that should help you get the job done. ;)

Keep us posted and great job so far. http://helpwrench.com/forums/showth...uild-Guide-with-Pictures-Tips-Pics-and-Tricks

dont have the money to completely rebuild it, i just want to get driving again, dont plan on having this truck much longer, would the sunshell have messed anything else up?

If the filter did it's job, cross your fingers that no metal fillings made it's way in to the transmission pump. If it's clean then your good to go, you might want to replace the boost valve (0.490") and servo to give your transmission a firmer shift and buy you more time while you have it.

You might get lucky and sell it to me
