I have 78,000 miles on 4.8. Valve tap turned into loud knock. Parked it and pulled head and found one lifter with scarring on the roller. I'm keeping this truck forever so I guess I'm asking if I should go all the way, replace cam, all lifters and such. From what I can see the cam looks alright. I would love to just replace the one lifter and be done. I must say I couldn't have purchased an easier vehicle to work on. I welcome any and all advice, opinions and the like.

what year is it? there was something awhile back about faulty lifters and camshafts, but I think it was the 5.3 engine

What do you mean scarring on the roller? As in the cam lobe? Or is the rocker scarred? Myself, I would just replace the lifter and rocker.

If the cam is still good, i would replace all the rocker and lifter since you have it apart. Also start running 15W40 http://www.shell.com/rotella/products/tpl-pro.html or http://canada.deloperformance.com/products/ Delo 400 SAE 15W-40 (API CJ-4)

Just make sure that the oil is rated as a CJ-4 and you'll be fine. ;)

Thanks to all who responded

All advice much appreciated. :) I cannot figure if the oil hole on the lifters goes up or down.

OKay, I got it back together

First thing thanks to all who replied. I tried the engine flush and changing the oil weight but it did not work for me. The roller on one lifter was gouged really bad and the wheel would not roll freely. I pulled the head and replaced it. I learned the LS1 (which is what I think I have?) motor is very well designed almost like they had repair in mind. No pun intended. I have never had a vehicle so easy to work on.

I too called the dealership about my warranty and she quickly informed me that I had better have service records (I do my own oil changes and the like) but she was relieved that my extended warranty had run out at 72,000 miles. I have 78,000 miles. Wow! I told her I would do it myself. I think GM ought to own up to the fact that they have a problem with the lifters.

I could never, after weeks of searching find any concrete information as to the orientation of the oil hole on the lifters. The only choices are up and down. I chose up on seven of them and I don't know about the eighth. It's back to its normal noisy self (without the banging of the bad lifter). Good day to all, Bill

The rocker looked good but the lifter roller was scarred up pretty good. I stuck a camera in the lifter hole and the cam looked okay so I just replaced the one lifter due to time and financial restraints. Thanks for your reply it is greatly appreciated, Bill

If you dont mind a used engine, most salvage yards sell them with warranty for around $500-$800 depending on the year and mileage.

Good luck and keep us posted.
