Hey folks,
I have an '08 Sierra Crew SLT Z71 4x4 with the All Terrain Package. It's looking like it's time for front brakes. I also own a 2000 F150 (yeah yeah, I know...) and have done the brakes on that many times. They are pretty easy. I'm hoping the front brakes on the Sierra are just as easy. Any advice or should I just go to work?

One other question. I'm thinking I'm going to want to use OE pads and rotors. They seem to last a lot longer than after market. Are there any good quality after market parts that are just as good?

Thanks folks.

Ray

if you can do the ford brakes then you can do these. napa ultra premium pads and rotors plus have a good waranty.

Lots of brake parts at NAPA and all the other parts stores come from China. Not one parts store in my area carries any USA made brake parts, all imported from China.

Even many of the well know brands are made in China. Yes, the may have USA made parts but you have to demand those or else they give you the made in china by default. Don't assume because it say Bendix or Raybestoes its made in the USA, they all sell Made in China brake parts.

If you are happy with that, then go ahead.

Why do you think you need new rotors. If the pads didn't score the rotors and they are in spec. for thickness and they are not warped then I wouldn't replace them. I wouldn't even have them turned , just use them as is.

bad idea to reuse the rotors. see people think in the now about brake rotors. What they should be thinking is how are they going to be in two or three years! Becaues if they pulsate or rust then you need to do another brake job. If you just do it right the frist time then the next 50 to 60 k miles will be trouble free.

But by all means same money now spend more later to do the same job.

If the rotors are good then there is no need to replace them. I've had disc brake cars/truck since 1964 and put an easy 100k on rotors before having to replace them. Hey if you want waste the money then be my guest.

jag what do you do for a living?

I am a retired mechanical engineer who likes to work on cars/trucks for fun unless I'm traveling. Have a good 4th today. Here's one of the toys.

nice car....... but you of all people should know better than to reuse old rotors with new pads and think that they will be ok for another 50k miles.

My best friend is a mechanical engineer for a bearing co. we have a lot of Laughs about how thinks are in the real world.

If they are in spec then they are good to go. Unfortunately today's world of mechanics seems to be replace for no apparent reason. As I mentioned if you want to waste your money then be my guest. You will see as the economy continues to tank more people will think twice about spending money when it's not needed. There are some who would rather eat and feed their kids instead of installing a pair of rotors that they don't need to. If your bearing friend is any good then he'll know how to measure and verify if the rotors are good or not. By the way one front rotor for the little red car cost $500 so why would I want to replace it if it is within spec.even though it's 34 years old.

ok frist of all the little red car is not a daily driver it's a toy. 2nd he lives in Michigan. I can tell you that there would be very few brake rotors that would last 100k miles in that state. Can you say rust and o ya more rust. do your home work before you give people advice.

My rotors have 168,000 miles on them with the same brake pads that came on my 2001 gmc truck when i got it new back in november of 2000. I changed the rear brakes at 99,000 miles and turned the rotors. The front pads are still half good and got 168,000 miles on them.

Sorry I'll assume this discussion is over. You may want to consult with others who have more experience then you. Have a nice day

With 168,000 mi, you should be prepared to replace a lot of the brake components on your truck. But unfortunately for all of us, 2 very knowledgeable site members have become side tracked. When either talk, I listen. Both make valid statements. So it's up to you to sift through the info and decide your best option.
