My front diff ran dry for who knows how long was on the highway to work when heard a clicking sound that went faster when I accelerated after pulling over to stop and listen to see/hear if it was continuous while sitting at an idle. No luck. Took it to a local shop and they said its either my front stub? or axel bearings and/or seals that are loose and that is the reason why my front diff leaked. I am curious on the cost/time/effort in swapping over a front differential on my 2000 gmc sierra 1500 4wd. And what the worst effects could be. It seems to be running fine with fresh fluid in it but still leaks. Have it booked in to a shop in next couple of days am contemplating just swapping out the bearings/seals. Anyone have any idea (canadian dollars) on the rough cost of picking up and having a local shop swap over the front differential for me? Not a good situation when I have a mortgage and wife w 3 kids to pay for and feed and work is slow. I am trying to be cost effective and need to get this fixed as my truck is our means of transportation and I need it to get to and from work in order to make money. My truck has a 5.3 engine. regular cab short box(if that makes a difference).
This is very frustrating. I have always taken care of my truck am the 2nd owner 1st was a farmer I know who always takes good care of his equipment and taught me taking care of machines will make them last longer. Every fluid has been changed and I am religious with my fluid changes (oil and filter every 5000kms). Saskatchewan based. Saskatoon closest city.

I do understand that machines break down I just want to know what I am looking at cost wise for picking up a sgi salvage (if ic an find one) front differential and the time/cost to have it switched over.
Thanks again.
280000 kilometers and still runs good. aside from a slight rough idle(believe it needs a tune up) and the front differential problem.
