I have a 00 GMC Sierra and recently got a code ( I forgot the code number) that said I had a fuel/air metering problem. The odd thing is that another code popped up the day before that said I had an O2 sensor bad, bank one, sensor one. I changed that O2 sensor with what they gave me at Advanced Auto and then the next day this metering code came up. The new O2 sensor that I installed didn't look exactly like the old one but I figured they may have changed them in the last 10 years but it did catch my eye. Any ideas on this problem?

Try cleaning you MAF sensor, the PCM needs the readings from the MAF sensor and the O2 sensors to adjust for the AFR. Also make sure that the engine is running at the proper operating temperature, so a bad thermostat will cause this issue also if the engine is always running cold.

Good luck and keep us posted and at worst the replacement O2 sensor is not compatible with your Sierra.

I failed to mention that I did clean the MAF sensor. No change. The engine is running at the proper temp. Could the O2 sensor be the culprit? I'm afraid if I get another one from Advanced Auto they will just give me the same replacement sensor and nothing will change. Any ideas? Thanks for your response!

Sounds like the O2 sensor is the issue then, the right and left O2 sensors should be matched up with one another. Good luck and keep us posted.:D

When you say matched up do you mean I should replace both of them if one fails? I'm thinking of going to a different auto parts store for the replacement that way they won't give me the same one. I appreciate you following up!

Nope i mean that the O2 sensors are from the same maker and part number. Good luck and keep us posted. ;)

04 Sierra Fuel/air Problem

I have a 00 GMC Sierra and recently got a code ( I forgot the code number) that said I had a fuel/air metering problem. My 04 Sierra HD goes into 'limp mode' occasionally and I have to stop, turn key off, loosen & retighten gas cap. Purchased a new cap and still has issues ever so often. Will get dealer/svc. to ck. for bad sensor.

Finally got my truck fixed. The generic code at Advanced Auto said "Fuel/Air metering problems". I was suspicious of the O2 sensor I replaced from Advanced Auto since this code came up the day after I replaced it. The salesman behind the counter assured me that it most likely was something else and he recommended I take it to a GM mechanic. I took his advice and low and behold it was a bad O2 sensor!!! The mechanic I took it to has GM diagnostic equipment and his code reader specified the O2 sensor I replaced. Just to verify he switched it to the other side and it gave him the code that that one was now bad. Advanced did replace it but the mechanic said it is not performing like it should and the code will probably come back on. He said if it does to replace it with a AC Delco O2 sensor as he has had issues with after market ones in the past. I think I'll take his advice and start replacing all my parts with genuine AC Delco in the future. I hope this helps someone out there experiencing the same problem. Thanks to all who responded to this post!
