hey gents,

i recently purchased an 88 sierra single cab long bed, and im having problems. she backfires through the throttle body throttle response is off , often doesnt have enough power sometimes stalls when in reverse. i often cant get it to pick up speed so i have to floor it to get it to downshift to pick up enough rpms to get it to go passed 2nd gear. i have replaced a kinked fuel line, fuel filter changed numerous sensors, been through three fuel pumps and second sending unit. i noticed the baffle in my tank is loose so i am replacing the tank sending unit and pump once again wondering if anyone has some advice. another question the old tank had two grounds one from the sending unit and one from the tank does it need the one from the tank because that one looked homemade. any advice id greatly appreciate. also lookin at replacing the throttle body heard there is a filter in it that also might be the problem. thanks again in advance guys.

Check your timing and your vacuum lines. Also try giving your Sierra a http://www.seafoamsales.com/ treatment. As for your ground to your gas tank, yes make sure that the ground is good and not corroded. A bad ground will also kill your fuel pump.

Good luck and keep us posted and you may want to replace your fuel pressure regulator since it's been in there for quite sometime. Your TBI runs best at 13-14 PSI. ;)

when i was replacing the transmission we messed with timing manually. i was told and read a little bout having to disconnect something or other in order to get an accurate timing correction. but we did this with out retarding till we got it were we thought it was right by sound and ran fine for awhile now the problem is back do you know anything about this disconnecting an element during manually timing adjustment. and i also was told might be a vacuum line issue but ill have to look into that more. when i install the new tank ill make sure to check on the grounds this time. thanks for the help molson.

The Timing Connector breaks out of the engine wiring harness conduit adjacent to the distributor. It is a single wire sealed connector that has a tan with black stripe lead.

Timing specifications are listed on the Vehicle Emissions Control Information label under the hood. Always follow the Vehicle Emissions Control Information label procedures first before using the following procedure. but you can go about 4-6 advance depending on how worn your distributor gear is.

Set timing under the following conditions:

* Normal operating temperature.
* Air cleaner installed.
* A/C "OFF".
* Transmission in neutral.
* Disconnect SET TIMING connector (tan/black wire) located in the harness close to the distributor. DO NOT disconnect the 4 wire connector at the distributor.
* Connect timing light and adjust as necessary by loosening hold down bolt and rotating distributor.

Base Timing, with Manual and Automatic Transmissions: 00(TDC)

* Tighten hold down and recheck the timing.
* Stop the engine and connect SET TIMING connector.
* Clear ECM trouble code by disconnecting ECM power source.

Go for a test drive and readjust if you like to fine tune your engine better but advancing at 2degress as a time.

great advice. also if anyone has suggestions on headers. shorty's, long tubes? definitely wanna go with ceramic coated. have custom straight pipes with glasspacks now. but so many choices between pacesetter, hedman, gibson, jba, flowtech and edelbrock. any advice is much appreciated.

just received my new fuel tank sending unit fuel pump and straps. this weekend ill be installing it making sure i get those grounds good then hopefully by next week ill be pulling out that throttle body gonna get a rebuild kit hopefully that will do the trick cuz the rebuild kit is much cheaper than a new throttle body. but its friday night and time for the bar. thanks for all the help molson. ill keep yall updated this truck will either be my pride and joy once i get her goin or the death of me haha.

tank, pump, sending unit, straps installed. throttle body rebuilt. and she is running real nice now. next project exhaust leak and prep for paint. goin from 33's to 35's tonight.
