Hey guys I'm new here and I have a 98' Sierra K1500...I need to replace the fuel pump. I have read somewhere that you can remove the drivers side bed bolts and loosen the pass side then jack up the bed to get to the tank, has anyone ever done this? Or do I have to drop the tank? Also what pump should I buy and are there anythings I should expect when changing it?

Remove the bed off the frame and don't forget to disconnect the wire harness to the tail lights. Also replace the sending unit wire harness from the frame to the sending unit, good luck and keep us posted.

Before you go replacing the sending unit, inspect the ground wire for the sending unit to the frame. A bad ground will also give you a weak fuel pump, making you think the sending unit is bad.

Good luck and keep us posted. ;) or and replace the bed bolts with stainless steel bolts.

I just replaced my sending unit / fuel pump in my 99 sierra and I just dropped the tank. It all went pretty easily. I tried to run as much gas out as possible and used my motorcycle jack to lower and lift the tank. I will say it definitly will be easier with two people. I would reccommend buying a high end oem brand pump as you only want to do this once. two things you might want to look out for is in you drop the tank the way I did, you have two hoses going from the fill neck to the tank ( inner and outter) the outter is the one you can see, the inner hose on mine had a crimp clamp from the hose to up in the fill neck that if you pull off ( which I did) you can get another clamp back on. What you need to do is lower the tank enough to undo the hose at the tank and pull both out or tack the full neck piece out from where it connects at the gas lid. the other is my new pump came with a different harness plug so you should be ready to soldier or crimp new wires together. good luck.

I took off my bed and it went really fast. I would def take the bed off again if I have to replace the pump again. Good luck.

tank 2 bolts, bed 8 bolts, tank light, bed heavy, do the math. ive installed airtex units (more than i can rememeber) and have not had one issue.
