I bought my 2000 GMC Sierra three weeks ago, and the gas gauge reading was erratic . I did some web searching on the issue, and found several other people with similar year GMC and Chevy trucks with the same problem. I noticed that if I rocked the truck side to side slightly from the driver's seat, the gas gauge would react wildly, so the problem seemed to be in the sender unit. On one forum ( maybe this one) I saw a recommendation for adding Chevron Techron Fuel System Cleaner to solve the gas gauge problem. I added two bottles and filled my tank. Now, two weeks and 200 miles later, my gas gauge seems to be working well. I'll find out how accurate the reading is when I next fill the tank, in about 50 more miles. I estimate the 34 gal. tank should be about one half empty, using a guess of 15 mpg. The advice I saw to check the ground wire connection on the tank is still a good idea, although I haven't done so yet.

How did this work out for ya I have the same problem with my 1998 gmc

My gas gauge is working better and better since using the Techron additive.
Now, the only time the gauge acts up is when I top off the tank. It takes about a 2 gallon drawdown to get the gauge working again. I'm hoping all gas gauge problems will soon disappear.
