GMC 1500 Transmission Temperature

What are safe temperatures for the 4 speed automatic transmission in a Sierra 1500 with the 5.3 liter engine? mine gets as hot as 230 when towing. I never hear a fan clutch come on either. Is this getting too hot?

Any excessive heat is too hot for any transmission, you may want to invest in a axillary transmission cooler and replace your transmission fluid with synthetic transmission fluid. The synthetic transmission fluid will not lose it properties like the conventional transmission fluid when it starts to get to hot.

It cost much more, but is much less then a transmission replacement.
