hello. Im new here but have a few questions about my sierr 1500 transfer case not engaging. i was stuck in mud one day and i was being pulled out when the 4x4 quit. I took out the front actuator and it was operating fine. the tcase motor appears to be ok. i went as far as taking the motor off the tcase and pluging it back in but left it hanging. I shifted the tcase shaft with a wrench to see if it would engage. still nothing. I drained the fluid and appeared to smell a bit burnt. The truck has 230k miles on it but they are not rough miles. Could it just burn the clutches in side? Or is the motor bad? IM stumped on this one. Help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

its a 2001 1500 with 5.3. nothing has been modified, completly stock. it has 230k miles on it but not hard miles. especially not in 4x4.

Just rebuilt a transfer case in an '03, they ran it out of oil, did surprisingly little damage, runs like a champ now :).

My guess would be your shift fork is burnt out, could have been from a time you disengaged four wheel drive on a hard surface and drove for awhile before the fork could finally pull the shift collar out. There is not much that can go wrong in there otherwise.

It's kind of a pain I know, you'll have to pull it, split it, look for the problem and fix it but it's not too hard.

Thats what i thought but i hoped i didnt have to do. It is what it is i guess! thank you for your response. What does a rebuild kit cost for that?

Local parts store here in Alberta it was around $800 for rebuild kit and chain, down in the US I imagine you could get parts for 4 to $500 I bet. We use aftermarket kits, I don't see any difference in quality.
