O.k, I've been trying to figure out this GVWR thing..? I've kind of read up on it and tried to find some videos but i can't find what I'm looking for. The only reason I'm asking is cause i bought myself a used 16 foot fiberglass boat from my father and I'm trying to figure out If I'm exceeding my towing capacity or what not. And just a note: I have no idea what the weight of the boat etc is. Though my Father use to tow it with a 2000 Ford F-150, V6 2wd. My truck is a 95 Sierra 4X4, 305 V8. So I'm thinking I'll be o.k, but i just would like an idea of how the GVWR works and if I'll be o.k towing the boat.

O.k, here's the GVWR and GAWR information i got off the driver's side door:

GVWR 6100/2767 - LB/KG
GAWR (FRT) 3880/1760 - LB/KG
GAWR ( RR) 3750/1701 - LB/KG

The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating is the maximum weight the truck can be; thats truck + cargo + fuel + passengers etc cannot exceed 6100 lbs. That exludes any trailers, that would be referred to as the maximum tow rating. That info might be in your owners manual but in all likelyhood will be at, very near or maybe even exceed the GVWR rating. So in other words you can tow a boat even if it weighed 5,000 lbs. I am guessing the boat you have is probably around a ton or so (2000 lbs) with a traller. Look in the yellow pages for certified scales and they can weigh it for a fee. Gravel/sand pits alsoo have scales to weigh vehicles and they might do it if not busy.

For instance, my 2012 Sierra Denali AWD Crew Cab can tow 9600 lbs.

As Z15 said the GVWR is the max vehicle weight and the other two values are how the load can be split up front to rear.
