help on a GMC Jimmy problem.....?

I have a 1998 GMC Jimmy, it resently stoped running. I was driving and the thing just shut off, i checked the fuel and it wasnt getting any to the motor, but its also not getting spark. then i looked in the fuse box and it has 2 fuses for the ECM, 1 was marked ECM 1 and the other was marked ECM B. The fuses that was blown was ECM B, I know thats the computer, the issue is i was told there are 2 different computers for that year Jimmy. I have the SLE 2wd 2dr with the 4.3 V6, what computer do i need? and is the computer pre programed for the truck, meaning do i have to get it programed for my specific truck or can i plug it in and go? and which computer am i looking for, the pne i have has ID numbers all over it would a parts house be able to tell me which one i need?

You only have one ECM on the jimmy, it's located on the passenger side fender well by the overflow tank. But before you go off replacing the ECM, inspect the fuel pump and fuel pump relay. The ECM sends power to the fuel pump relay and if the relay has gone bad (shorting out) will cause the fuse to blow which will kill the the power to the ECM, in turn kill the electrical power to the ignition system.

Start with the simple and remove the fuel pump relay and swap it with another relay and see if the fuse will blow again, if is does. Disconnect the fuel sending unit wire harness at the frame and see if the fuse blows again, if the fuse stays good. Chances are your fuel pump has gone bad or the fuel filter is dirt causing your fuel pump to draw more amp and will need to be replaced or the wire harness from the frame to the sending unit has a short which is common on older Jimmy's like ours (96).
