hello all and happy new year!

i have a 1990 GMC SUBURBAN SLE V1500 4x4 with about 342K on the body

350 with the 4 speed auto transmission

recently while i was driving it, i would hear a loud popping-type sound while coming out of a 90 degree turn at relatively low speed. this happened about twice. then, a few days later, after coming out of another 90 degree turn, i heard two loud bangs that sounded like someone dropped a pair of bowling balls on the roof, only it sounded and felt like it came from underneath the floorboard. i pulled over and looked underneath, i was sure something down there had broken off or something terrible like that had happened. i didn't see anything out of the ordinary, but when i got back in the driver's seat, i couldn't shift it back into gear. i could move the shifter easily, and i would occasionally hear that grinding sound like when you're shifting a 5 speed and you can't find the gear, and when i stepped on the gas, the spedometer would rev up like it thought the vehicle was moving, but it was sitting still. i was close to home so i just took it back to the house and it's been sitting in the driveway motionless ever since.
does ANYBODY have ANY idea what might be the problem here? a friend of mine suggested the rear end might be tore up since the spedometer started revving up even though i was sitting still. any thoughts or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated here. i'm not afraid to spend a little to get it fixed, but i definitely don't want to spend a whole lot on just figuring out what's wrong with it and i definitely don't wanna get screwed if it is something serious.

THANKS YALL

My 2 cents worth.

By the way you mentioned that the speedometer climbed when you gave it gas it sounds like the rear differential or maybe the output shaft on the transfer case.
With a little help from a friend put them in the drivers seat and have them put it in gear and see if the driveshaft turns. If it does then it's probably the rear end. If it don't then the transfer case or tranny are the problems.
You can get a good look at the rear differential by removing the cover on the back of it and looking inside. If chunks and bits of metal fall out when the cover comes off you may have found your problem. :)
