how to check fluid level. engine running or not in park are neut

CedJr194;
Transmission fluid must be checked with the drive train hot; as it is a hot check only. Therefore, you have to make the check after driving the vehicle. Once you park the vehicle in the driveway; set the emergency brake, pop open the hood, get your rag or paper towel, and return to your driver's seat. Next, the transmission fluid must also be checked with the gears full of fluid. Therefore, you being preparing for the check as follows: Place the gear selector in manual 1st gear for 3 seconds (one thousand one, one thousand two, etc.). Move the selector to 2nd manual for 3 seconds, then to 3rd manual, and so on up to and including drive for 3 seconds. Then move the selector to reverse for 3 seconds. Finally move the selector into either neutral or park; as this makes no difference which one you use. Note: Actually neutral is used when you have a vehicle that has no 'park' position. Once you have moved the selector into all gears for 3 seconds and then placed it back into park; jump out and check your fluid on the dipstick as follows: Pull the stick, wipe it clean, re-inset the stick, pull it the second time and read it for the correct fluid level. The level must read between the add mark and the full mark. The maximum safe reading should be full. Use a pint bottle to add fluid to the transmission should you need to add any. Most automatic transmissions' fluid levels are measured in pints. You must go through the gears as instructed above for each check. Should you change fluid and the transmission filter; check your specifications listing in your owners manual for the proper amount of fluid to re-fill the transmission pan. If it's in pints; figure out how many pints are in a quart, since the fluid is sold in quarts. This should help you in trying not to over fill the pan. Important note: Be extremely careful in re-filling the pan during a fluid and filter change; so as not to over fill the pan. Transmission pans have no drain plug to remove for correcting mistakes. Finally, you must find out what the torque rating for the pan mounting bolts is; as they must be torqued to specification with a torque wrench. When you buy a new filter for the pan; it will come with a new gasket for the pan.
