My 2002 Envoy seems to be stuck in 4WD. The 2WD light on the dash is on but I hear what sounds like the front wheels are engaged? Does that make sense? It sounds different than usual. I drove in 4WD during recent snow storms and had no problems taking it out a week or so ago. But now it just sounds different and there seems to be "dragging" when driving. If I try to put back into AWD and 4WD, those lights blink along with the steady 2WD light. I hear a light buzz as if they are engaging or disengaging. The Service 4WD light comes on on the dash. After turning off the vehicle and back on later, the Service light is no longer on.
Had an issue a few years ago, thought it was the acuator but it wasn't so took to a dealer. $700 later and no real explanation worked fine.
I'm worried I'll really hurt something now driving on dry roads while in 4WD.
Any step by step instructions to help?
Thanks much!

The front actuator has always been a problematic on these vehicles. Fist check to see if the encoder motor on the transfer case is switching from 4wd to 2 wd. You should be able to hear that moving when you use the switch to select.

If you do hear it moving, then in most case, its going to be the front axle actuator and bearing and that is expensive. The other thing also, you can try is remove the fuse to your 4WD and Body Control Module which is located in the fuse box under your rear driver side bench seat.

Try resetting the TCCM by pulling underhood fuse #8 for 30 seconds, then putting it back. See if the system behavior changes.

Also check rear fuse block fuse #48, that only powers the front axle actuator and the NEUTRAL mode light. Does the NEUTRAL mode work as the Owner's Manual says it should, and its light come on when expected?

Good luck and keep us posted.

Thank you so much. I will try these in the next few days and see if I can get back on track!

Is there a way I can tell if it is out of 4WD if the lights on the console switch do not work?
