How to I engage the alarm system in my 2000 GMC Jimmy?

I bought the Jimmy a couple years ago and my dad turned off the alarm system because it kept going off at school. Now I'm on a college campus (more urban area) and my mom wants me to keep the alarms on. I know that there's a button under the steering wheel that does it with some combination of hitting the remote, but how do I actually do this.
