The only way to shift my 1997 gmc suburban is by disabling the battery, shifting to neutral, then reconnecting and starting it. people keep saying it is an extra battery that is hidden?? how might i fix this???
my brake lights are working. it will shift but when it goes to park it wont shift out of it.

You should only have to put your foot on the brake to shift from park to drive. There is a solenoid won't release until you push on the brake, it's a safety item. Called an Inter-lock System
If it is the other way around you might have malfunction in the steering wheel lock.

Second batteries guy is pulling your leg.

Here is another way to get it out of park. Turn the ignition switch just off of the lock position, but not to the ON position. This takes the manual park locking mechanism out of the picture but doesn't apply voltage to the interlock solenoid. Give it a try. You can shift it to neutral at that point and then start the engine.

Your brake light, shift lever interlock switch is faulty, do you brake lights work?
