The return starter gear spring has gone week or the bearing is dried out and can no longer retract back from the fly wheel fast enough causing your grinding issues. This will get worst in the colder weather, so it's much easier to replace it now during the summer months if your going to replace it your self. The part is serviceable but not worth it since a rebuilt starter will cause you a fraction more then to repair your starter.

Best place for a rebuilt starter would be one of the local shops in your area that rebuilds starters and alternators and you may get lucky that the shop can do the install for an additional $50.00 with the cost of the starter. Just locate one through the net in your area and call to see if they also install, there are a few here in my home town that offer that.

Good luck and be safe, keep us posted. ;)
