Im trying to figure out if the rating on my truck for towing capacity is what my bumper is actually capable of towing its directly mounted to the frame but i highly doubt that this is capable of towing a 23ft searay that weighs roughly 5000 lbs not to sure. will find out for sure how much it weighs before towing. And if someone could help me out with a price on how much it would cost to just do it right and have an actual hitch installed... ive read about other trucks only being capable of towing 3500 lbs with the bumper but would just like to double check if the design of this truck is different before spending the cash to have a hitch installed.

2001 Sierra HT, "HT" stands for "Hot Truck," and the Sierra HT fits the description. The HT uses GMC's smallest V8, of 4.8 liters (294 cubic inches) displacement, with 270 hp at 5200 rpm and 285 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. But there is no power shortage anywhere, it's at its best in the middle of its rev range, with plenty of immediate grunt for acceleration or passing and a fine V8 exhaust rumble.

Like all of GMC's automatics, the 4-speed in the HT is electronically-controlled for efficient operation and features normal and "tow/haul" modes. Tow/haul holds gears longer for better acceleration and less "hunting" between gears on grades and the HT can haul 2054 lbs or tow 7300 lbs.

As for the bumper, I'd use a Class III trailer hitch with a anti sway system.
