i have a 2003 gmc envoy 4.2 does anyone know how many quarts of oil it takes?

why didnt the oil light come on when i only put five in it light comes on when you turn on the key so i know it works did i hurt the motor

If you mean that you just changed your oil and filter and then started the engine, yes you oil light would come on for a second or two. The reason is that there is no oil in your oil filter and the engine needs to pump oil in the filter before the oil pressure sending unit can register any pressure causing your oil light to come on. If there was an issue, the engine would turn it self off if no oil pressure or less then 6 PSI of oil pressure was detected in 10 seconds. :D
