o and we have replaced the thermostat three times to make sure that they werent bad and the one we have in isnt bad. but now my boyfriend told me yesterday that even with the thermostat out it overheats.. this does not make no sense to me..

Sorry for the bad news, but it sounds like you have a intake manifold gasket failure and your going to have to replace it. Inspect your engine oil and see if there are any signs of coolant mixing in with it. Note: that coolant is corrosive to the internal engine bearings so you may want to flush out your engine oil and replace it and the oil filter and flush it out again after 200-250 Miles once you have replaced the intake manifold gasket.

When replacing the intake gasket, replace it with the updated gasket and not the plastic ones. I recomend replacing them with the alluminum gaskets available at your local GM parts department. There a little more expensive but they last forever.

Here is a link to what needs to be done to fix your intake manifold if it is leaking from there.

My 96 overheating

I know it has been a couple years since this thread has been posted. I would like to thank Molson02536 for his help on this thread. My 96 Jimmy had an overheating problem which ended up being the lower intake manifold gasket. SAME EXACT LOCATION believe it or not!!! I have been searching for a solution for the past year on how to fix this and refused to take it to a mechanic. I am a handy DIY person and like to learn new things. My engine was dirty as hell with musd and gunk and so I never even realized that it could be the lower intake gasket. I had replaced the upper intake manifold gasket, thermostat, heater core, water pump, chaged the fluids and it never fixed it. Howeve thanks to Molson and his link with GREAT step by step images of the break down I am proud to say that my 96 Jimmy is now running better than ever! Thanks again and I look forward to talking and helping if I can!
