Hi guys, I'm new here and just recently got this 1991 4.3L V6 GMC S15 Jimmy SLX from a co-worker that was fed up and frustrated with working on it.

Original issue is that it would drive fine, until the Service Engine Soon light would come on, then it would start to sputter. Give it too much gas, it would fall flat on it's face and want to stall out. Not enough gas, it would sputter and bog. All temperamental.

Well when the CEL comes on he (previous owner/co-worker) stated that the code it threw was if I remember correctly, TPS Low Voltage?

He (previous owner/co-worker) has replaced the following...
-Fuel Pump
-Fule Pump Sock
-Rotor Button
-Cap
-Wires
-Plugs
-Throttle Position Sensor
-Map Sensor

I just replaced the Distributor last night, with new Cap and Button. While it hasn't fixed the drive-ability of the vehicle, it did however fix the rough idle and now idles smoothly with or without the CEL on.

I would like to go ahead and replace the in line Fuel Filter anyways for added piece of mind. Might do that tomorrow.

So to get on with the current issue. Since I replaced the Distributor last night. Drives like a champ! That is until the CEL comes on, then it loses all power and seems to go into a limp mode to where I can barely give it any Gas/Throttle without it wanting to stall out flat on it's face. Like an instant kill of power band, let off the Gas and it'll bog back up to idle. So I get under the hood and finger the throttle seems to only open a certain degree without the stalling effect. Unplug the TPS and nothing changes, same effect and symptoms. Swapped out the TPS with another that came with the Jimmy and still the same effect that it's not reading the TPS. But this is only when the CEL is on, which comes and goes, but mostly stays on.

So now I'm to the point that my Google Search Criteria isn't bringing up any helpful info. Yet alone it was a pain to try and Google Search for TDC marks, Distributor marks, and even Firing Order for this 4.3L. So I'm at a loss and need help.

seems you are having a similar problem as I in my 1999 jimmy same 4.3 vortex engine.

I thought I had fixed this problem by replacing my o2 sensors up front, however after replacing those the code popped back up... P0147... I was still having the same symptoms of sparatic stumbling and hesitation on accelleration and lack of power between 1500 and 2500 RPM..... I did find out there is a third o2 sensor behind the CAT so I replaced it and the fuel filter and after doing so it gave a new code p1416 and traced this down to the secondary air check valves one on each side... they looked pretty rough so I replaced those and code still lit... narrowed it down to the secondary air injection control valve. finally tracked down a new one and installed... bam! code gone runs better still slight hesitation but it picks back up within a few seconds… it usually only hesitates when I floor it so I have progressed with diagnosis on this issue… hope this helps

HOWEVER the CAT test will not run .... no codes popping up either... in addition (i'm unsure if this is related but the battery keeps going dead within an hour of switching off (alternator good distributer wires ect good) ... now for some head scratching... I went through the drive cycle appropriate for the CAT test to run several times no luck

anyone have similar issues or know where to direct me now... I'm about to change the coil it tests within specs but i'm kinda at a loss as to how to get it to run the CAT test to pass e check :/ feel free to send me a message on here with any advice 
