I have been having problems with my 2006 Sierra. I replaced the thermostat yet again this weekend. Is the thermostat really vital for the vehicle? Reason is, the mechanic took the thermostat out and I drove 90 miles round trip to buy another thermostat and coolant. I didn't have any issues. And once again the jerking started last night.
Is the thermostat needed?

you haven't told us what the problem is and why you suspect the thermostat
The truck jerks after a long drive or when the truck has been running for a while. This happens during idling and during acceleration. Nothing happens when your driving on the highway or at high speeds. I have gone through three thermostat within two months.

Im suspecting you may need to replace your spark plugs, they may be going bad and need to be replaced soon.
As for your thermostat, yes you need one to keep your engine running at its normal operating temp. To cold of a running engine and your ECM will run your engine and transmission in warm up mode which means more fuel being used up and your transmission will not lock up the converter at its normal given engine RPM speed and the gear shift will slide in to each gear which will wear the transmission sooner then expected.
Just a little FYI on what the thermostat does and is there any codes that may indicate why your engine is not running 100% when idling or your under acceleration???? Could even be as simple as a bad vacuum line that is causing your issues.
