I know the bare minimum about cars and haven't owned a GMC before. So bare with me.

I just bought a 94 Jimmy, engines clean, car is immaculate, said it was "sitting for 5 months it had a dead battery, and that the timing was a little off but that was it" 🙄 "Otherwise is a strong running vehicle."

So I got a battery, realized it's a side mount, installed adapters, installed the battery, started it up and drove it home (distance is half a mile/mile at most) Tires were low, ran a little rough, but had no issues. So I I parked it and went to bed.

Next morning I'm going to go fill up the tires, hit the key and it starts up just fine. Idles good. Had the air going and the stereo on, everything was sound. It pulled really hard to the right, but I assume it's just the low tire pressure.
About a mile down the road, maybe 2, at a stop sign as I went to hit the gas it had a definite hesitation (timing being off thus becoming clear) but we carried on just fine.
Gas station a few blocks ahead, we park it, fill the tires and grab some scratchers. (Were sitting there maybe 15-20 minutes before getting ready to leave again) Hit they key... isn't starting..gave it some gas, took a minute but it started, soon as I let off to put it in reverse, it died.

cranked it again, just turns and turns, gave it gas, nothing.

Got back out checked the battery. Fine.
Turned it on, check fuel pump. Fine.
Got back in and try it again wouldn't even turn over just completely dead.

So I let it cool down to less than running temp, but not cold (was a hot day, no patience) before I started it again and when I did it started right just fine. As I started to back up, it died.
Wouldn't start again. Repeated the same process as before. So I thought it may be and then replaced the crank sensor, $60 down the street and back, 35 minutes later. Trucks at cold temp now for sure, won't even start the one time. Batteries very low at the point, gauge says 9, thought maybe we should get a jump. Guy pulls over hooks us up, nothing.
Then I remember that its been sitting, it's got 3/4 tank of gas. Maybe the fuel is bad?
Holydamn I've never smelled fuel so gross.
Siphoned out most of what I could I got at least 6 gallons out. Went and bought some fuel cleaner and poured it in. Hit the key and again nothing. Tried pouring new gas in it as well filled her up and still nothing. Sat there for about 30 minutes 40 contemplating this purchase and decided to check for spark, did all that, and it has spark and randomly started and I drove it home. After spending all day at the gas station, covered in nasty gas, sunburned and out 150 bucks. My jimmy now returns to sit once more and I need answers! Please!

Maybe my temp sensor?
Could it all really be timing related? Distributor issues? What's the problem here :(

I also own a '94 Jimmy. Its sounding to me that you could be dealing with an injector issue based on the old fuel. Sadly, fuel injector cleaner doesn't always work. My '94 has a spider injector that I've had to have replaced a number of time due to clogging. the original actually looked grinded down and was flooding the engine. Check to see if fuel is getting to all your cylinders. If not, you could be dealing with an injector problem and will need to get it replaced. I hope this helps
