Lock IN/OUT hubs

I am looking into purchasing some lock in/out hubs to replace the auto hubs from the factory. I'm having a hard time finding information on this subject. I have been told it can't be done & that it can be done? So which is it? Can these hubs be installed using factory rims? What is a good brand? Will doing this give me better gas mileage? Any help would greatly be appreciated.

The old style automatic hubs could be switched, the newer stuff on the independent suspension I don't think can be done, at least not easily. The new system I believe engages the axles in the differential rather than at the hubs like the old style. There is no "hub" on the new systems.
