Locked Our of my new truck

Just got my new 2011 Sierra 1500 a few days ago. I went to the post office today stopped the truck left the keys on the seat. I got out of the truck took about two steps and my horn briefly honked. Yep it locked all the doors. I dont understand as The key and key fob were in the truck so I didnt push the lock button. Can someone please explain to this newbe

Hi jim, I looked through the owners manual for your vehicle and found the delayed locking feature. This feature (if active) will lock all the doors 5 seconds after the last door is shut. You will hear 3 chimes if the feature is activated. This should be what happened to your vehicle. You can set this in your DIC. The information for setting this feature is in section 5 on page 52 of your owners manual. I hope this helps you.

The delayed lock was on. I am still suprised as I didnt push the lock on the key fob but just in case I have now turned it off. Thanks for your help.

Once the key was removed from the ignition and the doors were shut, its locks them automatically without you needing to do anything. That's the design of that feature, works ok if you do not leave the keys inside. if the keys has been left in the ignition and not just laying some where else in the vehicle, the doors would have locked but then immediately unlocked as its almost impossible to lock your vehicle with the keys in the ignition. But anywhere in the vehicle the system is not smart enough to know the keys are left inside. The PassKey System on some GM models (Buicks, Cadis +) that use a transmitter (no ignition key) know when the transmitter is inside because the car cannot start unless it is. I don' think this is available on any truck, except Cadillac Escalade.
