...housing on a 1995 gmc jimmy 4.3 vortek engi? what is it . and what does it do?

It's for the main comp to read the temperature so it can engage the fan circuit , also it probably sends the signal to the temperature gages via the main comp=PCM.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way if you're having problems with that part it could be dirt or a bad wire going to the sensor , especially bec of how hot the wiring would get.

I am not a GM person but I would say that is a Temperature sensor for your dash gauge or light whichever it has for a high temp indicator,

Yes it is a thermostat sending unit.

You need it connected.

It sends a signal to the fuel air mixture of the computer ....... to the electrical fans..........and the gauge on the dash

If the computer gets no signal it will run in a rich warm up mode and waste gas.........And your fans will have to recalibrate through other sensors to know when to kick on..........sometimes your water temperature gauge wont work.

Have it reconnected or replaced ..........the parts cheap for what it dose.
