New here with Fuel Gauge issue.

Hello everyone, I have just recently bought a 98 1500 to pull my 21ft boat. I am concerned with what everyone is telling me about the fuel gauge fluttering and not giving an accuate reading. Now some have said to drop the tank, some say pull the dash and investigate the cluster, some say take the bed off for tamk access. I just would like a straight answer, even if it's take it to a mechanic. Thanks everyone. My name is Jim and I love my truck, just don't wanna run out of gas, thats just imbarrassing!

Untill your get your gas gauge working right, your going to have to go by the amount of miles you travel before your next fill up at the gas stations.

I would start with checking the wire harness from the sending unit from the top of the gas tank. The harness has 4 wires to it, 2 are for the fuel pump and the other 2 are for the gauge.

The wire it self could have a break in it and may need to be replaced and the harness is not that expensive. At worst, it's going to be a worn out sending unit that is giving you the issues you have mentioned above.

Try also to run some fuel injector cleaner for a few fill ups. Dirt and grim on the sending unit could also be cause this issue, but in most case. Replacing the sending unit will cure a faulty reading.

Good post. My truck has the same issue...it even cuts out sometimes when I'm really low and I turn to the left. lol It really doesn't bother me. You get used to it after awhile. I will look into it eventually but it's the least of my worries at this point.
