I am currently doing the oil consumption testing for my 2008 Sierra 5.3ltr. I did it the first time and the dealer installed the defletor sheild and decarbonized the cylinders. The truck is still losing oil. Now i was told by the service manager that the oil consumtion test has to be done 2 or 3 more times. Did any one else go through this and how many tests did you go through and what happened for the end result? Was it fixed?

Welcome to GM's bad design Active Fuel Management (AFM). I never had any problems with mine but I traded it in and got rid of the no-good AFM 5.3L engine. I got a Sierra Denali with 6.2L, no AFM.

Judging from what others say, you are likely going to be a year older before GM fixes is for good with new pistions. Forget about getting a new engine, that will never happen. Really can't blame the dealer because GM makes them go through all this BS. The dealer cannot side-step a GM process or he will not get paid.

I firmly believe GM considers oil consumption a necessary evil to get better fuel mileage to satisfy the gov't regulators who want unrealistic fuel mileage improvements from trucks and SUV's.

Well in just over 5,500 miles my average is 17.4 mpg. The average with the 2010 5.3L was 17.7 over 25,000 miles and 2 yrs. I never pay attention to any other mileage reading although checking it just for kicks once on a 500 miles trip I averaged 18.2. Per the window sticker 12-18 is the range. It runs ragged on lower octane fuel and recommends E85 or premium be used.

PS - I am a very conservative driver, don't hotrod or drive very fast. If you were that kind of driver (and I know someone who is) 12 mpg would be the norm.

Check out his FORUM you will get more feedback on issues like this.

Thats no that bad for fuel consumption.
Thanks for the other forum, I am on there as well.
