Oil pressure guage question

Just purchased a 2006 z71 5.3L sierra with 142.000 miles on it. My question is my oil pressure guage is reading all the way to the 80. The book said it should read somewhere between 40 and 80? Is it normal? Thanks!

I would like to congratulate you on your Sierra! Oil pressure may vary with engine speed, outside temperature and oil viscosity, but readings above the
low pressure zone indicate the normal operating range. If you feel that you are experiencing an issue with your oil pressure I would suggest that you contact your local GMC dealer and have them look into this for you. If you have any other questions please feel free to contact me anytime.

80 psi is a high reading. I once had a (new) bad oil filter that caused high oil pressure. Some vehicles have a pressure relief in the engine block, and others have it in the oil filter. Not sure where yours is. Could also be the oil press sending unit (cheap), but the failures I've seen typically show 0 oil pressure.

So what does it mean when the oil gauge reads 0 until the truck warms up and then bounces back and forth between 0 and 80?
