2001 Sierra 1500 Reg Cab.

Both of my backing plates are rusted off and I haven't gotten to my parking brake yet (not working). I've noticed my cables (left and right) and the steel hanger is rubbing on them causing the cable to be exposed.

How hard is it to install the cables and a pad kit for the parking brakes. any help would be greatly appreciated.

well backing plates and cables is not a job for the weekend do it your selfer IMO. The money you will save doing it you self could cost you more than 10 times that if you do it wrong. Rear end needs to come apart (remove axles) If you Don't know about rear ends then pay a pro to do it for you.

My 2 cents (I am a pro)

I do know a bit about axles but as far as I've researched they sell a 2 piece backing plate to avoid removal of the axle. Can you confirm this for me? Apparently this is common with these trucks. Also what is difficult about changing the cables? Am I missing something here?

I've been doing maintenance on my vehicles since I was a 16 with my first truck. I've rebuilt my engine also in the past. I'm comfortable with using my hands and i only do it the right way which is why I'm trying to get advice on this. I haven't had the pleasure of encountering a hand brake problem before so some suggestions would be wonderful.

read the stuff it is clear to me and helps me a lot thanks for the post.

Well then you should go for it. Let us know how you do. They make 2 pice backing plates but i do not use them. I only use OEM or = to Plus i think the 2 pice cheep But by all means they will work.

Be carefull not to break the bolt on the backing plate

Good luck
