The AC in my 1992 2.5L 4cyl hasn't worked in years and is extremely squeaky. I don't really need it or want it anymore. It's a gas killer. I have heard it can be removed and a "dumby" pulley put in its place. Anyone done this? Can I not simply remove AC compressor pulley and replace belt for this engine without AC?

You can do that and best place for you to get all the parts needed is the Salvage yard. But to tell your the truth, your A/C unit should not be killing your gas milage.

As long as your compressor clutch does not activate. The A/C pulley is just free wheeling like a normal idler pulley. If it's the squeaking noise that is driving you crazy from the worn out clutch plates. Simply spray lithium grease from a can into the A/C clutch and bearing assembly.

That should get it to go quiet for a while, and then your can decide what you would like to go from there.

Keep us posted and good luck.

i agree with the previous post. :) I had a 2.2l with no a/c, so that is another option as well, also if you dont have any refrigerant left, mind as well take out the condesor, mounted if front of your radiator, for slightly better cooling. goodluck!
