I have a 96 jimmy with a 4.3l v6. I have had a few problems with it since i bought it, but nothing that i could not fix myself. This morning, i was running late and i started it up to go to school. I started it and the rpms on the tach slowly rose to 3000 rpms at idle and the check engine light came on.Then because of the high rpms, it shifted very hard as well. Is this only because i did not give it ample time to warm up? It was cold this morning, around 20degrees. This truck has done this once before where the light came on during a high idle, but after school when i started it, the problem went away and the light went off. Any advice would help, i just want to make sure that this is not, or wont lead to any serious problems with the truck. thanks

Start with the simple and clean out your throttle body and make sure you get your IAC (idle air control) valve and passage way cleaned also. At worst you may have to replace your IAC if it' getting stuck in the open position. The throttle body blades also are known to stick open also from carbon build up if its that bad so start with a good cleaning.

Note tha putting the transmission in to gear while the RPM's are high has been know or snap the sun gear causing you to have major transmission issues.

Good luck and keep us posted
