Today I was driving my jimmy and all the sudden I heard two huge clunks below the drive shaft and then this loud squeal noise came out. I immediately pulled over and shut off the car then turned it back on again. The noise was still there but luckily i was two drive ways away from my friends house so i pulled in a we took a look at it. There was a smell of something buring, thinking a fluid of some sort which was present before I left my house but thought nothing of it. I got going again with a little noise but as I continued home the noise stopped but the check engine light was still showing. I drove to the nearest radio shack and the codes were P0171 and P1809 or something, the 18 one was a transmission related problem but after taking it back to my dealer and having him hook up his reader, he pulled the same codes but his code book told different things, still transmission. The dealer and I drove it a couple miles and the check engine light went away and the noise decreased. We checked the transmission fluid which was a lil past full but smelt burnt. Drove it back to the dealership and there was still a faint noise under the car but not as loud. Drove it to my dealer's mechanic and they looked at it and said it was possibly the torque converter. A couple other people I talked to said it sounded like it as well. The check engine light still comes on and off but the noise is constantly there, more so when in gear then in N or Park.

My questions would be:

What do you think is the problem?

How easily is it fixed and how much would it be?

Would the transmission need to be redone or could you simply change the converter?

Please be very uhh car stupid person friendly. =]
