Hi all,

I have a 2012 GMC Sierra K1500 SLE with about 67k miles on it. My last couple oil changes (about 4k - 5k miles between oil changes) were about 2 quarts low of oil. So I took it in to the dealer ship and they started me on an oil consumption test. Every 1k miles I bring it in and they check the oil level. My first 1k miles I didn’t lose any oil. I just went in for the 2k check and it was a half a quart low. They said that GM says if it doesn’t burn more than a quart every 2k miles then there warranty won’t pay for getting the engine rebuilt. This to me is unacceptable. An acceptable amount of oil to burn is 0 quarts and I’m worried that GM won’t pay for it if it’s not more than a quart low on my next 2k inspection.

Does anyone know what GM’s official warranty policy is about burning oil? Should I try taking it to a different dealership or will they all say the same thing? I’m really considering just taking out oil so it equals a quart low next time I bring it in. Or should I just sell it now and try a newer model (that’d suck cuz I just paid it off, really don’t want to do that)? Seems like too low of miles to be having this kind of issue with it. I really wanted to drive this 300k miles until it dies but I'm worried with this issue it won't last half that long. Kind of at a loss so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My guess is you will get the same answer from a different dealer. Using a quart or so is "acceptable" oil use between changes. Do a google search, particularly on BMW, and you will see that oil usage is quite acceptable to manufacturers. My 2012 will use about 1 quart between oil changes, depending on how long I go. I follow the oil life monitor. I have not had any problems and do not see any tell tale blue smoke. Good luck on whatever you decide to do. Just FYI, my 2012 has the 4.8L V8.

Go on the internet and Google issues with the Sierra with 5.3 or 6.0 with the Advanced fuel management. It's a mess, starts burning oil, lifters are going bad, my neighbor had to get his engine replaced with 47,000 miles on it. He lost compression in 2 cylinders.
