My air conditioning unit has chips and sparks coming out of it, and smells of burning rubber. This all happens when I turn on the defroster. Any ideas of what it might be?

If your mean your air conditioner compressor (unit has chips and sparks coming out of it), your A/C compressor bearing has failed and will need to be replaced. By the way your have described what's happening to your compressor, your best thing to do is to replace the whole unit.

Most likely the compressor seal where the bearing is may also be damaged or worn. If your lucky, it's just going to only be the A/C clutch assembly bearing that will need to be replaced. You can check this by inspecting the A/C for any signs of oil leak where the clutch pulley is.

Good luck and keep us posted and try not to use your defroster or a/c for now or you can pull the electrical wire leads on the A/C compressor to disable it, until you can get it repaired. ;)
