Hey folks, I'm new to the forum

I've got a 2000 Sierra 2wd shortbox, reg. cab. with a 4.8. I bought it last year with 97000 kms, It now has 128000 kms. I've had only a few minor problems since i bought it (drive belt, u joints) until the other day when I heard a loud grinding bang in the rear end. I thought it may have been a faulty rear u joint but it continued usually at low speeds and especially when turning. Now I realize that i must have snapped a gear or something has broken in the rear diff.

Now I don't want to attempt to pull the diff apart and start rebuilding the existing rear end, so I figure my best bet is to transfer out the whole rear end. I'm hoping to find one in the wrecking yard here but was wondering A) How interchangable are rear ends from other years/models of sierras, B) will a posi rear end bolt up (if I can find one for the right price) if my stock one is not C) I have a "tow/haul" gear so do i need to take that into consideration when shopping for a used rear end,

Thanks for any advice

Look in your glove box for the PRO code or drop down to your GM dealer parts department with your vin#. The PRO code or the Parts department can give you the information you need to as the gear ratio you have and your Sierra has a standard locking differential. It's common for the clutch pack in the locking differential to wear from lack of service, not like the open type rear ends that don't need as much attention as the close type rear ends.

Here is a link to your rear end and the parts that you need to address. Keep in note that using a used rear axle, you never know what type of service the rear axle has in the pass and you could find your self in the same situation in under a year after you swapped out the axle.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks a lot for the help. It's much appreciated. The hunt is on for a rear end (a clean one) and plan on tackling it this weekend. I'll post my results - fingers crossed
