I'm first off just like to apologize for my lack of understanding on vehicles, I only know a little bit, but I do know how to fix problems, and will try my best to understand everything anyone replies with. I've come here in hope of getting a bit more information on my vehicle, and how to fix an issue. For those who have a lot of time on their side, I'll include a long detailed story, and a short story.
Vehicle Details
1989 HalfSized Jimmy 4x4 (I don't know all the specific details of the vehicle, but I'll try to assist anyone who asks more about the car)
Short Story:
Bought a 1989 jimmy with rear end broken. Replaced the rear ends' pinion gear with a 1988 Blazer. Worked for 2/3 months, and now the gear that moves from the drive shaft to the pinion gear is broken, and I don't know why.
Long Story
When I bought this car earlier this year, the entire rear end was shot (but the vehicle would still move, just make a very, very loud/annoying sound), as expected upon buying the vehicle.
Now when I lifted the vehicle, opened up the rear end, put the car in natural and spun the rear end, I found that the Pinion Gear was shot and was missing one tooth, and others were damaged (if anyone could explain to me on how that could even happen, that would be nice).
I disconnected the drive shaft, removed the tired, and then removed the inner axles that hold the tires (took hours..), then disassembled the gears and inspected them all closely noticing the pinion gear itself was damaged, including some scratches on the spider gears, obviously because the metal bits from the broken pinion hit the rest of them, but they were intact for the most part.
So after spending about two months at junkyards trying to find a Jimmy, I gave up and then started to look for a Blazer of around the same year. I got really lucky on that one, removed a 1988 blazers' rear end, and took out only the gears within, leaving the axle at the junkyard (The blazer had roughly around 167k miles on it). I got home, and tried to clean out the axle of my 1989 jimmy as much as possible, replaced only the pinion gear (I do not recall the reason why only the pinion gear, but there was a reason to my madness). Sealed it up, put gear oil in it and the car drove great for about 2 month and a half, and now I'm here.
Now starting earlier last month though, it begun to make two interesting sounds, they were quiet, but as time progressed, it became louder.
First Sound: When the vehicle was on, and either in park or neutral, it would make the sound of like when someone doesn't have power steering fluid in their car, but if the car was put in reverse or drive (with or without moving), the sound would stop completely.
Second Sound: When I would be going roughly around 40 mph, and would very lightly touch the gas pedal (almost as to the touch of not even moving the vehicle), it would make this very slightly to the touch grinding sound. Though if I was to push the gas pedal down normally, the sound would go away. This developed earlier June.
Now, back to my situation as of now. Yesterday I was driving, and the (I don't know the name of it, might just be called another spider gear) gear from the drive shaft to the pinion gear became damaged, and cracked, and the eery sound from the beginning had returned to haunt me. I do not know why it would crack and break again, am I driving the car wrong, or is is it just a stroke of bad luck?
Goal:
What I'm going to try to do now is just buy a completely new rear end (unless someone says otherwise), but I don't know the specifics details of my rear end to do so, and I would greatly appreciate assistance. (This is the website I was looking at in maybe buying a new rear end: http://www.automotix.net/usedautopa...6blkzsZ5RVM2cG813Xgam54_JhVjnfuFBkhoCyQXw_wcB )
