I was wondering if anyone knows what is envolved with swapping out my rear end on an 06 Extended Cab. Right now it has a non-limited slip with a 3.31 ratio. ( I was told that by the dealership when they looked at the VIN number.) I bought this truck for a very good price and heard good reviews on the sierra. I live in buffalo so the weather is never good here. I want to get the limited slip with the 3.73 ratio. Any type of input would be great. Thanks

Actually the trucks do not use a Limited Slip, they use a Eaton Mechanical Locker.

You might not want to change the ratio as there is more involved in doing if you have a 4 wheel drive which would require changing the front ratio also and that could several thousand $$.

Installing a G80 Eaton Locker is a relatively easy task any GM dealer with a qualified differential tech can do in a few hours. Go to the part dept and tell them what you want to do, you will need a G80 case as its called, and they may as well replace the side bearings at the same time.

If you have a 2 wheel drive then there is not front axle. Either way, it would be easier and possibly cheaper to go to a salvage yard and get a 3.73 with G80 complete rear axle assembly and have it swapped in. Just about every 4x4 1500 series GM Z71 truck has a 3.73 and G80 so they should be available at salvage. Maybe even work out a deal for the yard to take your used open axle in trade?

That's what I would dot. Typically its going to cost you in the $500-700+ range to buy new GM parts and a coupe 100 more to install the G80.

I have included this info to avoid the confusion (even among GM dealer staff) that the G80 in trucks is a Limited Slip Differential which is not the case.

The only GM truck to use a Limited Slip was the rpo NYS Quadrasteer vehicles, they use Dana axles and the rpo code for the Limited Slip is G86.
