I just got this 1996 gmc sierra and it seems like im having to shift to early and if i dont shift the truck starts missing but once i shift it stops missing but once i get into fifth its fine but stills misses sometimes and if using cruise it kicks off

Start with the simple and replace your distributor's rotor and cap. The other thing also you should do is remove the EGR valve and clean it out and don't forget to replace the gasket with the updated one to help prevent to much carbon to build up causing the EGR to stick.
Also when you replace the distributor's rotor and caps, clean out the bottom of the distributor. There is a screen that get's dirty and plugs up causing no air to breath in and condensation will then promote corrosion under the caps.
Don't use cheap rotor's and cap's also, use the A/C delco or http://www.accel-ignition.com/Produ...jID=595&minID=5951&selection=9&minselection=0
The cap with the brass sleeve's are the ones you need to use, anything other then that will give you ignition issues.
The other thing also that might be an issues is the distributor it self on the 5.7 vortec engines. You might have to replace it if the distributor has gone bad from a worn out bushing. http://www.accel-ignition.com/Produ...jID=595&minID=5951&selection=9&minselection=0
Good luck and keep us posted, you can also try using http://www.seafoamsales.com/ in your engine through your vacuum line to clean out your upper intake which should help your engine run better. Almost forgot, clean your throttle body making sure you get the throttle body cleaner through the back of the intake if the bore so it will clean the IAC valve.
