...to haul a GN 6x14 horse trailer.? The rated pull capacity says 5000lbs. I will be pulling only twice a month short distances. Is this wise, or should I get a bigger truck. Which I can't afford right now.

You'd be exceeding the weight capacity of your truck by the time you drop the trailer on it, add a couple horses and all of the tack, etc. Even over a short distance on a limited basis, you'd be putting the livestock and the all passengers in danger not to mention anyone else on the road. Mechanically, the V6, 4.3L is going to have hell pulling that much weight anyway, especially if you have any hills to climb putting more strain on your engine and transmission.

I've been rodeoing since I was a kid and hauling horses around the country. You never know what you're going to run into out there and if you add the extra stress of a horse that gets spooked and decides to act up in a trailer, you're looking at a recipe for disaster.
