smoking

I just today got a gmc sle sierra 5.7 and upon start up it smokes very badly.
I was told that it may be valve guide seals ? If so what is involved in replacing the seals ? I can't afford to rebuild the motor at this time. If I used a heavy wt. motor oil would that reduce the smoking untill I could get something more permanent done ?

I am new on this forum and I will probably be calling on you folks often for a while untill I get to know my truck.

No, the oil will not help. It does sound like it could be valve guide seals. When the seals are bad they allow oil to be sucked past the valve guides into the combustion chamber. Not an easy job without special tools, valve covers have to come off, need a device to insert into spark plug hole to use air pressure to hold the valve up while you remove the retainers and replace the seals. Have to loosen every valve spring, re-adjust the lifters. All in all it could take a skilled mechanic several hours to do this. Not something a amatuer should attempt.

88 gmc sierra sle auto transmission

My transmission when shifting out of low shifts really hard untill it gets warmed up after that it seems to be ok.
I just recently traded for the truck so I don't know when if ever the transmission has been serviced. Do you think that fresh fluid and a new filter might help it ?Also does this tranny have band adjustments that might need adjusting ?
