I have a 2000 GMC Sonoma V6 4.3L, all winter it has been hard to start, taking 4-5 tries to fire up. Then last week it wouldn't start, I got it home and let it sit in my garage all week and threw in a propane heater on Saturday. My roommate tried it and it fired right up, I came home 2 hours later and it wouldn't start for me. The next day I was able to start it right up. I drove it around, put better gas in, and isoheat. I drove it all week and then this morning it wouldn't start. I brought it to a shop tonight and they said it was the fuel pump and gave me an estimate of $700 to fix it.

If I wanted to do it myself would it be easier to drop the tank or lift the box off. Is it worth saving $400-$500 on doing it myself or is it more a pain in the ass...or is that even the real problem?

I replaced my fuel filter about 3 months ago. Is replacing the wiring harness for this just as hard as replacing the whole unit?

Do it yourself. Very easy to do. I dropped the tank using a motorcycle jack. Once it was down far enough, i disconnected the electrical and fuel lines and pulled the tank out. The new units come with a new connector that was very easy to replace.

Good luck.
