Having successfully replaced the starter in the beast, and having it now work just fine, I'm mystified by the presence of a a small wire post located on the end of the starter motor itself. The old (original) starter had no wire attached to it so I didn't have a wire to attach to that post on the new one. It works fine without it but I hope I'm not overlooking something important.
