Tranny fluid for 5 speed

Can anyone tell me what type and amount of fluid for a 5 speed manual without low gear? I have a '94 Sierra K1500. I know that the book specifies GM synthetic oil but is there a good alternative? I have over 160,000 miles on it.

Well, its either a NV3500 (MG5) or NV4500 (MT8)trans. Very possible its the MG5 but you need to confirm. There is a label in the glove with one of these codes on it, tell me what it is and I can tell you what to use. One takes a GL4 gear lube and the other Syncromesh fluid (light oil).

You do not have to use a special GM branded fluid. If you were selling vehicles and also selling lubes for those vehicles, you would not recommend a competitor either as it would be lost income.
