my 86 sierra has a 305 sbc with a 700r4 transmission but i was given a 350 4 bolt main sbc would the two of those join together or do i need a certain transmission to match up with the 350?
thanks z-15 my friends kept telling me i needed a 4 bolt main transmission and couldnt find anything online on the subject thanks for your input! much appreciated!
Just goes to show you what your friends know. No such thing!
4-bolt main is only referring to how many bolts hold the crankshaft onto the block and that is the only difference in the engines. There is very little benefit of a 4-bolt main block unless you are doing some serious racing. 4-bolt mains hold up better in high rpm use like NASCAR. Many GM hi-performance cars came with 2-bolt main blocks, SS396, SS454.
When shopping for a block, look for desirable features such as four-bolt main bearing caps. Trucks, police cars, and taxicabs are likely sources for heavy-duty castings.
