i have a 1994 Sonoma 5 speed. when down shifting from 3rd gear to 2nd, 2nd will not engage unless 1st gear is engaged or pushed on first. is this a linkage or transmission problem? If I attempt engaging 2nd without 1st first it just feels like a wall and the gear is not there. any ideas on what this could be?

sounds like not a linkage problem. Im not positive but theres something internal that would bring the gears up to proper rpms so that you can downshift. Someone on here should know. Try double clutching, like the semi drivers do. Wish i could be of more help, but its been a long time since i worked on automatics. I remember and excitor type thing internally...idk....good luck though

You mean manual? I rev match every gear I downshift and double clutching doesn't work either, it takes too long because I'd have to engage 1st gear so it defeats the purpose.

This might be a shot in the dark, but check the fluid in the gearbox. I changed the slave cylinder in my '97 about a year ago and it made grinding noises and shifted hard. Turns out the fluid level in the gearbox was low. I topped it off and it went away. That may not be the case with your truck, but I'd check it anyway. You never know.
