there is a hose that runs from the top right of my trans and goes back to my transfer case. I had a trans fluid leak and found that this hose had broke into, I used a barbed fitting and put this hose back together. can anyone tell me what that hose is for and should it have trans fluid going through it? it looks like a vacuum hose only heavier.

That sounds like the vent tube from the transfer case, if there is transmission fluid coming from there, the seal at the tale of your transmission has gone bad and is leaking into your transfer case.

It can be replaced without dropping the transmission, but your going to have to separate the transfer case and transmission to get to the seal.

Keep us posted and if you need instructions on how to, feel free to post for help

transmission question,

molson thanks for the reply on the trans question, I was thinking the seal was bad but was hoping for conformation, does'nt look like the transfer case will be to bad of a job on removing. Once again , thank you for the reply.

Pull the fill plug out of the transfer case and see how much extra fluid is in the transfer case. If there is any, you need to replace the seal before you do anything else. The seal is $11, dont buy the cheap one. You can replace the seal without dropping the case.

Remove the shafts, take out the transmission mount and cross member. Drop the transmission down until the transfer case is resting on the torsion bar cross member (as low as it will go).

Remove the encoder harness and the other plug. Remove the bolts that hold the transfer case to the the transmission. Leave the adaptor plate on the transmission. The case is around 60 pounds. It probably will not come out but don't get your head smashed.

Push the case back and twist the front toward the passenger side. You will see the seal and the seal retainer is held on by 4 bolts. They have sealant on them so be prepared to fight them the whole way out. The retainer is sealed to the case but there is a hole/slot in the side to get a small prybar in there.

I'd say its at like 10 o'clock. Pop it off, it will clear the transmission if you lug the case around. Replace the seal and put it back together. The best sealant to use is Ultra Gray. There is no paper gasket available to replace the one between the transfer case and the adaptor. Use the Ultra Gray there too.

Just get up in there and make sure both surfaces are clean and remember its aluminum so don't get all nuts up there with a razor. Put it back together easy squeeze together so that you don't squeeze the sealant out between the transmission and transfer case.

Hope this helps

I pulled the filler plug on the transfer case it was pressureized tues evening, checked trans fluid on dip stick to tranny on wed evening it was also under pressure, Is this caused from the seal being bad also. Oh and the transfer case had exactly one quart overfilled in the case on tues. I am planning on changing the seal on saturday, Thanks for your help on this .

Pressure in the transmission is caused by the vent tube to be plugged up and will need to be cleaned up so it can breath.

The extra transmission fluid in the transfer case is from a bad seal at the transmission and leaking fluid into the transfer case.

Once all have been done, replace the transmission fluid with TranSynd™ Transmission Fluid. Its a synthetic transmission fluid that can be mixed with the transmission fluid in there now.

keep us posted.

molson 02536, You have answered Trans questions for me , I have the gmc jimmy 4wd that was getting trans fluid in the trans case. It is an automatic trans. I have taken the transfer case off trans, It looks like the seal is a small seal that is recessed back into the rear of the trans,What can I use to pull the seal out of trans to change it?
