What kind of motor does a '97 GMC Sierra 1500 truck have?

my friend has the truck and my other friend says its a 4.8l and i say its a 5.0l.
the 4.8l didn't come out till the re-design of later '98 right?

the truck is an ext.cab short bed and no third door completely bone stock. the reason i think its a 5.0l is because of filter shape. we cant tell because the stickers are torn off.
he isn't around often so i cant tell by vin number
